Obituary of Steve Schebel

In Loving Memory Of Steve Schebel

Steve Schebel passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on November 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and friends. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Steve lived a rich and fulfilling life marked by humor, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to his faith, family, and community. Born to Tillie and Mike Schebel on July 21, 1932, on the family farm just south of Ituna, SK, Steve grew up alongside his brothers, Leo and Joe, and his sisters, Josephine and Rosie. Over the years the family moved from the Ituna, SK area, to Camperville, MB, back to Sheho, SK, and then finally settled in Foam Lake, SK. At a young age, Steve helped with chores looking after the horses and working many jobs. On July 20, 1958, Steve married the love of his life, Sophie Sereda, beginning a beautiful marriage that would span 66 years. Together, they raised two children, Bradley and Joanne, to whom Steve passed down his values of kindness, integrity, and gentle strength. Steve dedicated over 38 years serving the town of Foam Lake and was well known as the town foreman for many years. He upheld a strong sense of work ethic and civic responsibility. A man of unwavering faith, he was an active member of the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, volunteering and serving over the years as caretaker and janitor. Steve’s commitment as a volunteer extended to his community as well, where he gave over 30 years of service to the Foam Lake Volunteer Fire Department, acted as President on the board of the Knights of Columbus Beach and served on the board of the Foam Lake Housing Authority. Known for his infectious laughter, quick wit, and genuine warmth, Steve brought joy to everyone he encountered. Steve retired from the Town of Foam Lake in July of 1992. He and Sophie liked to travel and put countless miles on their camper van. They soon developed a love for polka fests and left their mark on many dance floors across Saskatchewan. Steve soon found a new job and spent many years helping his son Brad at the welding shop. He was very adept at keeping the shop spic and span and always had a fire going in the morning. In his free time, when not helping Sophie out in the garden or doing dishes, he was often be seen walking or cruising around with Ernie either going for coffee or helping Ernie get wood. Steve played with the same zest he brought to all areas of his life. Known as a comedian and prankster, he could make anyone laugh until they both had tears in their eyes. He was an expert card player and could always found enjoying a lively game of "3 Spot" with family or friends. Forever young at heart, he played with his grandchildren just as if he were one of them. Above all, Steve was a family man. He is survived by: his devoted wife, Sophie; his children, Brad (Mariann) and Joanne (Dale); his grandchildren, Steven (Morgan), Sarah (Spencer), Miranda (Trevor), Alix (Alex), Michael (Devin), and Kassy (Andrew); his great-grandchildren, Ella, Lucas, Rhett, Sophie, Lola, Eli, Jack and Von as well as many extended family. Steve cherished every moment with his loved ones, and his warmth, sense of humor, and love will be missed beyond measure.
